If you are like me and trying to plan things to keep your child active during the summer, I want to remind you to also think about their mental health!
“The link between mental health and physical health is generally misunderstood because the mind and body are considered two separate entities, but oftentimes these two entities need to work together for our own wellbeing. Our mental health can directly affect our physical health and vice versa.” ACSA
Just a quick glimpse at my 8 year old daughters summer plans. Girls scout camp which will be 7 hours outside exploring, hiking, learning, and building relationships with other girls scouts. Soccer camp - 3 hours of learning and improving soccer skills, running kicking and constantly moving. Hip Hop and Tumble class - learning new dances which include flipping and cartwheels. These along with her usual weekly gymnastics class.
Her physical activity is full! Great, mom, you have the physical activity down, but what am I doing to build her mental health?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing.
Yes, she will be social in all of these camps, but will she be ready to met new friends? Will she have anxiety the morning before she starts a new camp? Will she have a hard time initiating conversations? Will she be able to handle not being good at something?
This is where we need to add mental health activity into our summer schedules.
Meditation, daily affirmations, breathing, talking and preparing them for the day and what it may look like. Acknowledging their feelings and fears. Reading books to help bring up conversations. And of course, therapy.
Finding the right therapist to be on your team and be there to help with these situations can be beneficial to your child, but also to you.
At Nurturing Wellness, we believe that children need a team of support. You show up to a soccer game with grandparents, aunts, friends, neighbors on the sideline cheering for the child. Why not have a team including a therapist cheering your child on for reaching their mental health goals?
Let me cheer them on with you!
During the summer, we will be having group therapy on many different topics. Click here to sign up for one.
